A new mental health crisis service in Reading will be run by the charity Together for Mental Wellbeing.

The charity will get NHS funding from Berkshire West Clinical Commissioning Group to run ‘The Breathing Space’ every Friday to Monday in the evening. It is aimed at people needing short term crisis support, either self-referring or on the advice of health professionals. The CCG hopes it will ease pressure on A&E and other emergency services.

The space will be modelled on mental health crisis cafes run in other parts of the country. Its central Reading location has not yet been made public.

The CCG said visitors will be helped to access community resources such as recovery colleges or secondary care mental health services.

Together already runs Berkshire West Your Way, a daytime community mental health support service.

The Breathing Space is due to open later this year.
