The experiences of people whose discharge from hospital was delayed

We gathered in-depth histories from seven people or their relatives between September 2013 and March 2014, about their journey through hospital, to understand why their discharge was delayed.

Summary

  • None of the people we spoke with were satisfied with the discharge process
  • Relatives/carers said opportunities were missed to prevent hospital admissions, particularly from sheltered housing or care homes
  • People said they were given inadequate information about finding a care home
  • Hospital discharge was sometimes halted at the last minute
  • Some interviewees thought they were ‘caught in the middle’ of hospital or social care staff, who failed to communicate properly with each other
